III BABEL International Conference · Florence, 8–10 May 2025
BIC25 — Forging Digital Money in the Tokenisation Era: Reshaping Legal Tender? — was convened by the BABEL research unit of the Department of Economics and Management, University of Florence, in co-operation with the European Banking Institute (EBI), within the PRIN project DeTOKoDE (MUR / NextGenerationEU).
Two committees shaped the conference: a Steering Committee, which defined its scientific direction, and an Organising Committee, which carried it out.
Steering Committee
The Steering Committee set the scientific scope of BIC25 and selected the themes around which the ten sessions were built. Its members were Christos Gortsos (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Seraina Grünewald (University of St. Gallen), Rosa María Lastra (Queen Mary University of London) and Yuri Biondi (CNRS–IRISSO, Université Paris Dauphine–PSL).

The task of a Steering Committee extends beyond gathering distinguished international experts around a table. What mattered was selecting scholars whose work spoke to the questions BIC25 set out to address, at the intersection of digital currencies, monetary systems and regulatory innovation. The measure of that choice is the record of the conference itself, now published in full.
I am grateful to every member of both Committees. My particular thanks go to the European Banking Institute and to its Academic Board Chair, Professor Gortsos, without whose support the conference would not have been possible — and to those colleagues who worked quietly, taking on tasks well beyond their own, and whose contribution is visible only in the fact that everything ran.
— Filippo Zatti, BIC25 Chair
